Medical malpractice lawsuit filed following Joan Rivers' death

Joan Rivers lived a long and full life. Well-known to many for her comedy and sharp wit, she received a lot of attention for her role as a television commentator on a fashion show with her daughter, Melissa Rivers, who lives in California. Unfortunately, Joan's life ended suddenly following what her daughter Melissa contends was surgical error.

Joan underwent a procedure on her throat related to her vocal cords in Manhattan in the fall of 2014. According to her daughter, complications arose that Melissa believes were preventable. Joan suffered a cardiac arrest while in surgery. Melissa contends that the doctors failed to properly observe her mother's vital signs and did not have a fully equipped crash cart. Both of these, Melissa believes, were surgical errors that led to Joan's death. Additionally, doctors were allegedly taking pictures of each other working while the surgery was ongoing.

It is for these reasons that Melissa has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the clinic where the procedure was performed, as well as the two doctors and three anesthesiologists involved in Joan's treatment. The actions of allegedly careless surgeons have resulted in serious consequences and the tragic loss of a life.

The potential financial recovery in this lawsuit is large, possibly in the millions of dollars. Of course, such a suit will not bring a loved one back to life. A medical malpractice lawsuit has great value to not only financially compensate the loved ones of the deceased, but also to hold the acting parties, such as the clinic and the doctors in this case, responsible for a fatal surgical error. Joan Rivers was a vivacious personality who unfortunately lost her life due to what may have been utterly preventable causes.

If you or a loved one have fallen victim to medical error, it is important to understand your rights and options regarding a medical malpractice suit. Depending on the circumstances and the details of the claim, compensation could be awarded. Victims should learn more about their legal options so they can take appropriate and timely action.
