California attorney counsels patients with anesthesia injuries

It can be nerve-wracking for California patients to put their lives in the hands of a doctor, particularly if that doctor is an anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologists, who are responsible for the administration of anesthesia to a patient, as well as the patient's condition as the patient recovers from the anesthesia's effects, bear a tremendous responsibility as they work with the potent effects of these medications that can render a person unconscious.

Sometimes, unfortunately, anesthesiologists make mistakes, and these mistakes may prove fatal. As this blog reported in a previous post, Melissa Rivers believes that the anesthesiologists who provided care for her mother, Joan Rivers, contributed to her ultimate death. She named them as defendants in the medical malpractice lawsuit filed in connection with her mother's death.

Most of the time, anesthesia is administered without serious complications for a patient, yet sometimes a doctor may administer an incorrect dosage or type of anesthesia that causes a negative long-term impact on a patient. If an anesthesiologist fails to properly monitor a patient while surgery is ongoing, or afterward, a patient could experience serious harm. Injuries that may result from medical error related to anesthesia administration include spinal cord damage, cardiac arrest, stroke, brain damage and possibly even death.

It is imperative that an anesthesiologist take into account how anesthesia medications will affect each patient in light of his or her specific medical history, as well as any medications that will be administered during and after surgery. To fail to do so could lead to serious consequences for a patient.

If you or a family member have suffered from medical problems following treatment with anesthesia, you may have a claim for medical malpractice. Steven Kastner has experience successfully counseling clients in similar situations. For additional information about these kinds of claims, visit our anesthesia page.
